Tony Crossley's - PATTAYA - The GOOD, the BAD & The OTHER

I am presently reading Tony Crossley's book on "An All-Sides Look At Thailand's Capital of Fun"  This is a quote from his book which I am presently reading.

PATTAYA'S HISTORY

Mention Pattaya to an outsider (and some insiders), and a 3-letter word will often, directly or indirectly, be referred to: Clue: the word begins with "s" and ends with "x". From the way some people go on, anyone would think a most basic act of life never occurred elsewhere. For those who snipe at the place, you can bet it doesn't happen much. For those to whom it is the be all and end all, it didn't before they arrived. The place is often written about as if it was the only fishing village in the world that became a "fun" resort, but the fact is that at the same time it started to be popular, similar was happening to a village called St. Tropez in the South of France and to countless other in Spain and the Balearics Islands.  If a guy had anything about him, all the social and physical intercourse he wanted was available.  And it was free. What that makes guys who came to Thailand to dope-up and now wax lyrical about gazing all day at pristine beaches, I'll leave others to decide.

Pattaya had an usual elevation into the tourist premier league, in that it came via foreigners who were sex-starved in their homeland and further corrupted by having forcibly inducted into the military to fight a pointless war thousands of miles away. An airport was built at nearby U-Tapao, which became a base for the bomb-laden B52's that caused so much death and destruction.

The US's invasion of Viet Nam led to a sleepy Thai fishing village soon being tagged "The Sex Capital of the World". A local columnist wrote that creating such places is what the US does best. It may be so,but they can't do it alone. People are what they are, money corrupts and where there's demand will be supply.  Demand was for what men anywhere will go to extreme lengths to get and it was supplied by women  who had few opportunities in life. Delving into statistics as to how many illegitimate kids were born to already poor women is pointless, as such figures are guess work. As usual in the aftermath of an invasion, the invaders were more eager to justify it than accept responsibility for their actions. Social consequences of US policy in S.E. Asia, as with elsewhere stretched far beyond the borders of the invaded state. When the conflict ended and the US military left Viet Nam, Pattaya became noted in the West, where sociality with females is difficult for many men, as a place where company was readily available even to a  Quasimodo.  In short Pattaya became notorious due to the US, a country, now likes to condemn the place.  Why? Pattaya fills a need that is created by a severe cultural deficiency of those nations.

Starvation of any sort can result in fixation and  Pattaya's most die hard fans have to admit there has been an emphasis  by many locals on exploiting Farang cultures that have created a surfeit of relatively weathy men who can't achieve their natural desires where they come from.  Many foreigners also seek to profit from a conveyor-belt of souls that are starved of social and  physical intercourse. the fact that most Thais have not on a large scale never been a demon to be battled daily as it has been  for centuries in much of the West, Means that in general it is accepted by most of the people as a "NORMAL PART OF LIFE".  (NB: Some Thais who travel are catching the anti-sex virus and infecting their homeland.
